Mission + Vision
AUTF offers original, historically inspired typefaces to the wider creative community, inviting others into the stories behind each creation.
The Anderson University Type Foundry (AUTF) was founded in 2022 and exists to build a lasting community of typographers—one that extends far beyond the classroom. It is a place where meaningful work and enduring relationships are grounded in a shared love for the letterform.
The typefaces available through AUTF were most often developed in courses led by Professor Tim Speaker, and are most often rooted in historical study and research. The design process typically begins by hand—sketched on paper—then refined digitally and ultimately produced as fully functional OpenType fonts. Visitors to the AUTF website can download these typefaces free of charge. In some cases, designers may also offer expanded font families, including additional weights and styles, available for purchase through their individual third-party platforms.
The Letterpress, a dedicated section of the site, serves as a space to tell the stories behind the inspirations, processes, and development behind each typeface. It also features updates, news, and insights into the ongoing work and creative activity happening within the AUTF community.
AUTF intends to:
Offer compelling, original typefaces steeped in history to the larger design community.
Foster fellowship and community within the group of design students.
Provide valuable connections to AU alumni and the professional design world.
Encourage students to create for the eternal rather than the temporary.
